Do you have back pain or neck pain?
If you or your teenage child has been diagnosed with a spinal curve it can be a life-changing moment. Consequently, it’s crucial that you see someone quickly who specializes 100% in scoliosis, rather than an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon who spreads their time among other back problems. Scoliosis, spinal deformity, kyphosis, flatback syndrome all require extensive experience from a specialist who can inform you of your non-surgical treatment options, or if surgery is required.
If surgery is required, a scoliosis specialist is trained to perform minimally invasive scoliosis surgery to shorten the incision, lessen the disruption to ligaments and reduce the need for outside blood. This shortens the time in the hospital and shortens the recovery time with a less painful rehabilitation.
Finding a spine surgeon who specializes 100% in scoliosis and spinal deformity WILL LIKELY REQUIRE YOU TO TRAVEL to a regional spine center that focuses on scoliosis, kyphosis, flatback and other complex spinal deformity.
Dr. Rory Mayer's goal at Texas Spine and Scoliosis is to return you or your teenage child to a normal life.
Symptoms
The vast majority of back problems improve on their own or with nonsurgical treatment. There are a few warning signs, however, that may indicate serious spinal problems.
Conditions
You might be surprised to learn that 80 percent of the time, back and neck pain is simply a result of strain or soft tissue injury.
Treatments
For disc herniations, Dr. Rory Mayer in Austin, Texas can provide minimally invasive spine surgery through a half-inch incision, as well as artificial disc replacement.
Rory Mayer, MD
A resource for spine problems in the Austin, Texas region
Rory Mayer, MD, is a board-certified and dual fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specializing in adult scoliosis, complex spinal deformity, and advanced reconstructive spine surgery. Dr. Mayer is one of only a small number of neurosurgeons in the country who specializes exclusively in the surgical treatment of complex spinal deformities. Dr. Mayer focuses on the treatment of complex spinal disorders, including degenerative scoliosis, flatback syndrome, kyphosis, spinal instability, revision spine surgery, and other challenging spinal conditions. He utilizes advanced spinal instrumentation, state-of-the-art intraoperative navigation technology, and collaborates with vascular and plastic surgeons when treating some of the region's most complex spinal cases. Like his partners at Texas Spine and Scoliosis, he embraces a "conservative care first" philosophy, working closely with his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation colleagues to ensure patients receive comprehensive, individualized spine care.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Traditional spine surgery requires a 3-inch incision. Dr. Rory Mayer is proficient in the latest minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. Using special instruments the width of a ball point pen, Dr. Mayer is able to treat herniated discs through a half-inch incision using tubular retractors that have tiny cameras and incisors in the tip. The tiny incision can be covered with a large Band Aid, and patients can go home later the same day to recover in the comfort of their own home. Patients have a much quicker recovery with far less pain.
